Is a low carb diet right for you?

The idea behind this type of diet is that the lack of carbohydrates forces the body to turn to fat reserves for energy, causing weight loss at a faster rate. However, most low carb high-protein diets restrict some of the more nutritious foods for your health, so you must be aware of this when selecting foods for this type of diet plan and know what other conditions factor in.

When body fat is used as a main energy source Ketones are produced when glycogen stores are depleted. Most advocates of low-carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins Diet, argue that the human body is adapted to function primarily in ketosis. When in ketosis ketones (a by-product) are excreted in the urine and glucose production is slowed. When your brain is lacking glucose, you can become fuzzy and can’t think straight. You also may become irritable and cranky, and may experience dizziness, fatigue and headaches. This in turn also causes a mood change because serotonin levels drop to lower levels and that moody and tired disposition definitely doesn’t make you a fun guy to be around.

Low carb High protein diets also promote bad breath as a side effect of ketones being released through your lungs. This gives you a sickly, sweet or alcoholic odor.”

Advocates of a low carb diet suggest that high insulin “sugar levels” can cause many health problems including heart disease and most significantly fat storage and weight gain. They also argue that the purported dangers of ketosis are unsubstantiated and if the diet is instead adjusted to induce ketosis, fat and cholesterol in the diet are not a major concern.

In other words

Advocates suggest that ketosis or low insulin levels in the blood for more time causes fat to be eliminated from the body. They also argue that fat in the diet only contributes to heart disease in the presence of high insulin levels and that if the diet is instead adjusted to induce ketosis, fat and cholesterol in the diet are not a major concern. Although this remains controversial, a high level of ketosis can lead to more ketoacidosis in the blood line causing your kidneys to work harder to get you back to a natural state. The diuretic effect of eliminating carbohydrates from your diet stresses the kidneys while they remove urea, a by-product of protein synthesis, from the body. Compounding that problem, when the body is in a state of ketosis, increased levels of calcium are excreted — that can lead to kidney stones, (a build-up of calcium in the urine). Literally pissing away calcium is a major factor of high-protein diets because that will have a negative effect on your workouts. Calcium is a necessary mineral for muscle contraction and nerve impulse. Calcium loss can also lead to stress fractures.

Although diets vary in their recommendations, as a general rule, those on a low carb diet should get at least 60 to 70 percent of their daily calorie intake from fat. Carbohydrates can make up less than 10 percent, and in some cases, less than 5 percent of daily calorie intake.

Ketosis ( /kɨˈtoʊsɨs/)
Ketosis is a state of elevated levels of ketone bodies in the body.

Ketone
Ketone bodies are three water-soluble compounds that are produced as by-products when fatty acids are broken down for energy in the liver and kidney. They are used as a source of energy in the heart and brain. In the brain, they are a vital source of energy during fasting.

Ketogenesis
When the livers glycogen stores are depleted ketogenesis produces keytone bodies

Glycogen
Glucose stored as energy for any short energy burst

Ketoacidosis
When the levels of these ketone bodies are too high, the pH of the blood drops, resulting in the body producing insufficient insulin to slow this production. The excess ketone bodies can significantly acidify the blood. The presence of a high concentration of glucose in the blood (hyperglycemia) caused by the lack of insulin can lead to further acidity.

Acidity in the blood line
“Acidity can make you very ill and makes the body work harder to get you back to a natural state”.

Summation

People go a long ways to shed pounds. There are many diets and many ways to fight your body into submission. I don’t know about you but I’m like an electrical current looking for the ways of least resistance. After much is studying and many articles I found that relaxing with a cup of coffee that gives me 150 antioxidants to calm my body may be the best way to go. I get increased energy, vitamins, minerals, and an appetite suppressant all in one. And my appetite suppressant is a natural one built on the premise that my body is truly satisfied and does not need any more fire for the furnace. What are you waiting for, take the road of least resistance and make your coffee count.
